Social Networking 2.0 Could Look Like This Perspective · August 2026

Having witnessed the evolution of technology for over 40 years, I believe the future of social networking lies in a re-engineered ecosystem built on better principles.

If social networking is to become truly social again, the future is not another platform. It is a better foundation.

That belief led me to develop the Siftio Framework, my vision for what I call Social Networking 2.0.

Siftio is built on six foundations:

  • Identity
  • Boundaries
  • Governance
  • Accountability
  • Privacy
  • Sustainability

These are not features. They are principles that could shape how future digital communities are designed, operated and trusted.

FamilyNet, a nonprofit initiative, is the first platform being built on this framework.

I will explore each of these foundations further and why I believe they are important to the next generation of digital communities.

Technology should serve communities. Communities should not serve technology.

Technology Should Reflect Society Perspective · August 2026

Technology has transformed how we live, work and communicate. Yet we have allowed technology to dictate how we interact with each other rather than expecting technology to reflect how we have interacted in the real world for millennia.

In the real world, trust is built over time.

  • Communities have boundaries.
  • Schools know their students.
  • Organizations know their staff.
  • Families know who belongs within the family circle.

These are not restrictions. They are the foundations of trust.

Yet most online environments are designed with very different priorities. As a result, we have spent years trying to solve problems by adding more moderation, more policies and more controls to systems that were never designed with trust at their core.

Perhaps it is time to reverse our thinking.

Instead of us adapting to technology, we, the people, should be asking technology to adapt to us.

The digital world does not need to replace the principles that have helped human communities thrive for generations. It should strengthen them.

If we begin designing digital environments that reflect how people naturally build trust, responsibility and relationships in the real world, we may find that many of today's challenges become easier to address—not because we have added more rules, but because we have started with a better foundation.

I believe the future of online social networking lies not in creating larger communities, but in creating better ones.

What If Social Networking Didn't Depend on Algorithms, Tracking, or Strangers? Perspective · June 2026

For years, we have been trying to make social networking safer through moderation, parental controls, awareness campaigns, reporting tools and increasingly complex privacy settings.

Yet many of the same concerns remain.

Perhaps we are focusing on the symptoms instead of the structure.

Over time, I have started to question some of the assumptions that seem to define modern social networking.

Do social networks really need algorithms deciding what we see?

Do they need to track user behaviour in order to function?

Do strangers need unrestricted access to one another?

Does every platform need to be built around maximum reach, maximum engagement and maximum exposure?

What if those are not requirements at all?

What if they are simply design choices?

I have been exploring these questions through a framework I am developing called Siftio.

Rather than asking how to make today's social networks safer, Siftio asks a different question:

What would social networking look like if trust, identity, privacy, accountability and community boundaries were built into the foundation from the beginning?

The framework explores concepts such as:

  • Verified identity
  • Controlled communities
  • Permission-based interaction
  • Privacy by default
  • Human-scale networking
  • Transparent system behaviour
  • Safety through structure rather than reaction

I do not claim to have all the answers. But I believe it may be time to rethink some of the assumptions that have shaped social networking over the past two decades.

Perhaps the next generation of social networking will not be measured by how many people we can reach, but by how much trust we can create.

Social Networking 2.0 — Where Do We Start? Perspective · June 2026

For years, we have kept circling the same debate.

Policymakers have continued to warn of serious consequences for the next generation. New policies and guidelines include responsible-sounding calls to action:

  • Ban social media for young people.
  • Restrict access.
  • Add warnings.
  • Push awareness.

It certainly sounds responsible. It feels like policymakers are driven to act.

But it changes very little.

Why?

Because the system itself remains untouched.

We are trying to manage the outcomes of a structure that was never designed for safety, trust or human-scale interaction.

No amount of regulation, education or parental vigilance can fully offset that.

We have been stuck here for a long time:

  • Years of awareness campaigns.
  • Endless media interviews by experts.
  • Countless nonprofits promoting a safer Internet for children.
  • Ongoing discussions among policymakers.
  • Repeated public expressions of concern from politicians.

These are well-intentioned efforts, but they have not addressed the root cause of the problem.

The core environment continues to produce the same risks.

That should tell us something.

This is not simply a usage problem. It is a design problem.

If we are serious about protecting the next generation, we need to shift our focus:

  • Stop reacting to symptoms.
  • Start examining the structure.
  • Ask why these systems behave the way they do.
  • Rethink what a social network should be in the first place.

The real opportunity is not in banning. It is in re-engineering the current design of the social media ecosystem.

We need thoughtful, structured re-engineering of social platforms so they better reflect real-world social circles.

And this conversation should start where it matters most—in schools.

Schools are not just places of learning. They are foundations of social development.

This is where think tanks, educators and technologists need to come together. Not simply to regulate the old system, but to consider what the next one should look like.

Because the question was never simply "to ban or not to ban."

The real questions are:

What could we build instead?

Where do we start?

And more importantly, who will take the lead in building it?

Ban Social Media for Youth? We're Solving the Wrong Problem. Perspective · May 2026

Awareness campaigns, digital literacy programs, parental guidance and online safety training all play important roles.

But after years of relying primarily on these approaches, the results have fallen short of expectations.

We should ask whether the ecosystem itself also needs to change.

We keep focusing on managing the damage after the fact instead of questioning the design that keeps producing the damage. We are focused on the wrong end of the equation.

Maybe it is time to stop trying to make people adapt to flawed systems and consider re-engineering social media systems themselves.

A few simple questions:

  • Why can't we extrapolate real life into online life?
  • In real life, we lock doors and windows for security. Why can't online social spaces be designed with similar boundaries?
  • Research suggests that even online, humans tend to manage only about 100–200 stable relationships. Why, then, are platforms built around exposure to millions?
  • We live and socialize largely in local, trusted circles. Why do online systems assume we need global access to find "friends"?
  • Why are openness and unlimited reach treated as virtues when, in many cases, they contribute to the problem?

Human social behaviour evolved around limits, trust, proximity, boundaries and guardrails.

Current social media largely ignored those parameters.

The answer may not be better warnings.

It may be better architecture and less focus on coping with harmful outcomes.

Those with the resources to make meaningful change often seem reluctant to challenge the underlying model. Regulation is easier than rethinking the architecture, but it leaves us dealing with many of the same problems.

We need to focus on redesigning the environment that creates those problems rather than continually addressing them after the fact.

That is the discussion we should be having.

Social Networking 2.0 — How Social Are We, Really? Perspective · May 2026

We use the word "social" very loosely.

But how many people are we actually connected to in a meaningful way?

In real life, our social world is not unlimited.

  • A small inner circle.
  • A slightly wider group of friends.
  • A professional network.
  • A local community.

Each is different. Each has its own context. Each has its own boundaries.

Research suggests most people can maintain around 150 meaningful relationships. In reality, our active circle is often much smaller.

So the question is:

If our real social capacity is limited, why is our online social world designed to be unlimited?

In real life, we live in protected spaces.

We have doors.

We have locks.

We decide who comes in.

We separate our spaces. Family is not work. Work is not public.

Online, it is very different.

Our social spaces are often open by default. Anyone can enter. Everything can spread beyond its original context.

Is this how social interaction was meant to work?

Or have we accepted a model that does not reflect how we actually live?

Perhaps Social Networking 2.0 needs to reflect real life more closely:

  • Smaller, defined communities
  • Clear boundaries
  • Controlled access
  • Context-based interaction

Not everything needs to be seen by everyone.

Not every connection needs to be global.

Maybe the idea of "reach" needs to be reconsidered.

Maybe scale is not the goal.

Maybe structure is.

Hyperlinks Are the Most Trusted Element of the Web — and One of Its Most Overlooked Risks Perspective · April 2026

Having started in this industry long before the web became mainstream, I have seen many changes in how systems evolved.

One thing that has remained largely unchanged is how hyperlinks behave.

A link can display one destination and lead somewhere else.

This is not a bug. It is how the web was designed.

Over time, this simple behaviour has enabled:

  • Phishing and online fraud
  • Hidden redirects and tracking
  • Misleading user interactions

Much of what we call modern cyber risk often begins with a link.

Standards bodies define how the web works. Browsers decide how those standards are implemented.

So the question is not whether this can be addressed. I am sure it can.

The real questions are:

Why has this persisted for so long?

Why are users not questioning it?

Why has no browser taken the lead to address it and champion the cause?

What benefit does this design provide that keeps it in place?

We have learned to live with a structural weakness that sits at the centre of how the web works.

That is worth rethinking.

Mental Atrophy: Are We Losing Our Minds — One Tap at a Time? Perspective · August 2025

I coined the term "mental atrophy" to describe a shift I have seen in myself and others.

We have handed over so much of our memory, focus, navigation and judgment that we may no longer be giving our brains the daily exercise they need.

The brain is like a muscle. The rule is simple: use it, or lose it.

What Are We Really Losing?

Focus — We can't sit through a meeting without checking a screen.

Recall — We don't remember facts; we remember where to look them up.

Spatial awareness — We follow GPS blindly, often without knowing north from south.

Critical thinking — We accept recommendations without question.

Technology is brilliant. But if we let it think for us instead of with us, our minds may soften over time.

I want to be clear: technology isn't the villain. The problem is overdependence.

As someone who has worked with technology for over 40 years, I have always seen it as a powerful computing environment—a tool for managing information, accelerating analysis and extending human capability.

But somewhere along the way, we lost our way.

Technology remembers — so we don't.

Technology navigates — so we follow.

Technology recalls — so we forget.

Technology suggests — so we stop deciding.

Technology thinks — and we just tap.

The very tool meant to enhance our minds has begun to replace some of the work they once performed. With the rapid adoption of AI, this is likely to accelerate.

If we don't reclaim some of these daily mental tasks, we may not simply lose focus. We risk losing authorship of our own thoughts, becoming observers as machines increasingly influence the decisions.

Have we crossed a line of no return? Or is this simply a natural evolution?

The Curse of TCP/IP Perspective · August 15, 2025

How a Rushed Protocol Became the Internet's Weakest Link

TCP/IP was never designed to secure banking, medical or government data. It was built for a relatively small community of researchers who trusted each other. Security was not a primary design objective.

As the Internet expanded from research labs into homes, businesses and governments, engineers kept adding new layers around TCP/IP to address limitations in the original design.

Firewalls filtered traffic. Network Address Translation helped shield internal networks. Encryption protected sensitive communications. Later, Content Delivery Networks improved speed, resilience and protection against large-scale attacks.

None of these changed the foundation itself.

They were important innovations built around a protocol that was never intended to support a global economy or safeguard billions of people and their most sensitive information.

Native authentication, encryption and identity verification were not built into the original TCP/IP protocol suite. The priorities were connectivity and deployment, not the security requirements we expect today.

The result was a foundation that required decades of additional technologies to make it suitable for the modern digital landscape.

Decades later, we are still patching the cracks: breaches, ransomware attacks and a massive cybersecurity industry trying to defend a system designed for a very different world.

The deeper problem may be cultural.

TCP/IP helped establish a precedent in which rapid deployment could take precedence over security. That mindset can still be seen in how technology is built today.

Unless we design future digital infrastructure with security, identity and accountability as core principles rather than afterthoughts, we will continue building tomorrow's Internet on yesterday's foundations.

We Built the Social Media Trap — Now Our Children Are Stuck in It Perspective · August 2025

We created the problem. Now it's on us to lead the way out.

Having shaped today's social media environment, our generation has a responsibility to improve it so the next generation inherits not only safer systems, but safer interactions within them.

Our generation normalized many of the platforms that are now causing concern.

  • We embraced social media without fully understanding it.
  • We trusted "free" platforms without considering the cost.
  • We bartered privacy for no-cost convenience.
  • We handed over family data without fully understanding where it might lead.

And now?

Young people are growing up in online environments where strangers can gain access to them, social comparison is constant, engagement is encouraged at every turn, and privacy is increasingly difficult to maintain.

It took a generation for many of the consequences to become apparent.

The question "How did we get here?" requires us to look inward.

We clicked "Accept All" and, by example, taught our children to do the same.

We prioritized technology adoption over understanding its consequences.

We handed devices to our children because technology had become part of modern life.

We cannot change those decisions, but we can decide what happens next.

If we truly care about the next generation, we should:

  • Speak openly about the risks built into mainstream platforms.
  • Stop confusing popularity with safety.
  • Support ethical, privacy-first alternatives.
  • Take digital safety as seriously as physical safety.

But ultimately, awareness alone will not be enough.

Our responsibility is not simply to teach the next generation how to survive the digital environment we created. It is to leave them a better one.
